US 60/65 Interchange Springfield, Missouri
Traffic
Galloway Creek Greenway Trail CLOSED indefinitely at Route 60 near railroad tracks. Trail open on either side of Route 60 for regular use.
Paving has begun for the bridge deck for the northbound to westbound flyover ramp.
EARLY HEADS UP: Galloway Creek and James River Greenway Trails scheduled to CLOSE indefinitely between Brunswick Avenue east of Route 65 and the iron bridge on River Road in early July. Exact date to be announced later.
U.S. 60/65 interchange reconstruction will be staged to keep traffic moving on the highways. However, lanes will be reduced and low-volume ramps will be closed temporarily. Lane shifts also will be used. Temporary roadway and ramp closings will be necessary at times.
Sections of the Galloway Creek Greenway and James River Greenway trails will be closed where they cross under U.S. 60 when hazards exist. These trail segments at U.S. 60 may be closed for long periods of time because of extensive excavations in the ground and work overhead where new bridges must be built. However, long sections of the trails AWAY from the construction will be open and safe to use.
• Periodic nighttime closings of U.S. 60 and U.S. 65 to set “flyover” bridge girders.
• Westbound U.S. 60-to-southbound U.S. 65 loop ramp closed so southbound U.S. 65-to-westbound U.S. 60 detour can be built. (Detour will be marked to direct traffic to nearby interchange.)
• Traffic shifts on U.S. 65 and U.S. 60 and on the ramps at various times throughout project.
• Northbound U.S. 65-to-eastbound U.S. 60 ramp closed (3 to 6 months) as eastbound U.S. 60 bridge over Lake Springfield is widened to the south. (Detour will be marked to direct traffic to nearby interchange.)
• Trail segments closed underneath U.S. 60 near BNSF railroad tracks and at the bridge over Lake Springfield. However, the trail segments will be reopened for short periods when conditions are safe.
Thеn
• The two new “flyover” ramps opened – eastbound U.S. 60-to-northbound U.S. 65 and northbound U.S. 65-to-westbound U.S. 60. New ramps will carry traffic over U.S. 65, U.S. 60 and the railroad tracks.
• Westbound U.S. 60 traffic is shifted to widened eastbound U.S. 60 bridge over Lake Springfield.
• Westbound U.S. 60 bridge over Lake Springfield is removed and new bridge is built.
• Periodic nighttime closings of U.S. 60 to set girders for building of new northbound U.S. 65 bridge east of existing northbound U.S. 65 bridge.
• Temporary ramp closing for relocation (3 to 6 months): westbound U.S. 60-to-northbound U.S. 65. (Detour will be marked to direct traffic to nearby interchange.)
• Relocated westbound U.S. 60-to-northbound U.S. 65 ramp opened.
• U.S. 60 reduced to one lane each direction through the interchange for eastbound and westbound “straight through” traffic while new westbound U.S. 60 bridge over railroad tracks is built.
• Trail segments closed underneath U.S. 60 near railroad tracks and at Lake Springfield bridge. However, the trail segments will be reopened for short periods when conditions are safe.
Thеn
• Traffic shifted to new westbound U.S. 60 bridge over railroad tracks so eastbound U.S. 60 bridge can be built over railroad tracks.
• U.S. 60 reduced to one lane in each direction for eastbound and westbound “straight through”
traffic during construction of new eastbound U.S. 60 bridge over railroad tracks.
• New northbound U.S. 65 bridge and adjoining new pavement completed and northbound U.S. 65 traffic is shifted onto it.
• Southbound U.S. 65 traffic shifted to old northbound U.S. 65 bridge so deck and girders can be replaced on existing southbound bridge.
• Periodic closing of U.S. 60 to dismantle southbound U.S. 65 bridge over U.S. 60 to replace deck and install new girders on southbound U.S. 65 bridge.
• Trail segments closed underneath U.S. 60 near railroad tracks and at Lake Springfield bridge. However, the trail segments will be reopened for short periods when conditions are safe.
Thеn
• New westbound U.S. 60 bridge over Lake Springfield is opened and trail segment underneath U.S. 60 at Lake Springfield is reopened.
• New eastbound U.S. 60 bridge over railroad tracks is opened and trail segment underneath U.S. 60 near railroad tracks is reopened.
• Southbound U.S. 65 traffic shifted to rebuilt southbound U.S. 65 bridge over U.S. 60.
• Periodic nighttime closings of U.S. 60 during dismantling of old northbound U.S. 65 bridge over U.S. 60.
