P16-B water systems built in 15 remote areas
Some 5,700 families in remote areas of Region 12 (Soccsksargen) stand to gain from the P16-billion water systems project that has been completed.
Bai Zorahayda Taha, director of the Department of Social Welfare and Development Region 12, said on Friday that the “community-owned water systems” were installed in 10 barangays in Sultan Kudarat, four in Sarangani province and one in North Cotabato.
Tahas said that the completion of the water systems will allow full access of potable water to remote areas in the region, and will end the “decades of suffering of thousand families.”
“Most of these families had to endure long walks over rough terrains and slopes just to get water. Some tried to dig wells but the water quality was usually poor and they run dry during summer season,” Taha said.
In Sultan Kudarat, there are already 3,901 households currently benefiting from the project, while there are 1,509 families benefiting in Sarangani province and 167 families in North Cotabato.
The DSWD director said that these projects were also in aimed at helping the livelihood of the residents in the area.
“They now have more time to engage in income-generating activities and livelihood ventures,” Taha said.
Region 12 is comprised of four provinces—South and North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani—and five cities—General Santos, Koronadal, Tacurong, Kidapawan and Cotabato.
